In the project ColorSol®, the focus was placed on the development and improvement of dye solar cells. For this purpose industry-oriented manufacturing methods of dye solar cells were developed as well as an analysis of market opportunities and possible applications of this innovative technology was realized. Within the project first prototypic dye solar cells were built, which could identify applicable production processes in industrial scale and demonstrate the outstanding characteristics of the dye solar cells.

The dye solar cell belongs to the technology field of electrochemical thin film solar cells. In dye solar cells, sunlight is transformed into electricity with a metal organic dye based on ruthenium. The organic dye is embedded in nanocristalline electrodes out of titanium dioxide. In principle this process is comparable to photosynthesis in plants.
